CVS Data Table Downloads                                                                                             8/25/2008

The master CVS database is maintained on a personal computer in the USFS Regional Office in Portland, Oregon, using Microrim R:Base 4.5++ for DOS database management software.  The database tables stored on this server have been exported from R:Base into a set of dBase III®-compatible files for each of the 19 National Forests in the Region.  These files can be imported or opened by most of the commercial database management software available today.  Each set of National Forest table files has been compressed into a single self-extracting WinZip® file.  To download one of these compressed files, simply click on the link for the target National Forest in the appropriate table below.

A comprehensive data dictionary and project QA/QC reports for each set of survey data can be found at the CVS documentation page.  The data dictionary is current for the Forest projects listed in below.  It is important to note that dBase III® allows only 8 characters for column names.  As a result, some of the names found in the data dictionary have been revised in the dBase III® files in order to meet this requirement.

The CVS data has completed a reconciliation process that ensures that remeasureable data are consistent across measurement intervals.  The files on this page have all been through this reconciliation process.

NOTE:  For security purposes, the GPS coordinates stored in the plot record are randomized approximate values that are accurate within 1 mile of the actual locations.  99.7% of the plots are within 0.85 miles of the actual locations.  Any narrative blocks that address plot access or UTM coordinates have also been removed or altered.

Initial installation survey data

The CVS data files listed in the table below are the initial installation surveys completed from 1993 through 1996 (a few carry-over plots were completed in early 1997).  During this period there were numerous changes to field procedures and plot design.  These differences have been reconciled across all of the initial installation survey years to the extent possible to meet the requirements established in version 2.05 of the CVS Field Procedures Guide.

Data for each Forest are contained within a set of compressed dBase files.  Click on the name of the National Forest below to download the file.  File sizes vary from 0.9 to 2.9 Mb.  These data are from initial installation surveys only.

Remeasurement survey data

Remeasurement survey datasets are listed in the table below by project year and remeasurement panel.  A CVS remeasurement panel consists of approximately 25% of the initial installation sample units.  Originally, a different panel was to be remeasured every 2 years on each Forest resulting in the entire Forest being totally remeasured over an 8 year period.  Beginning with the 1999 projects, however, the remeasurement cycle was adjusted to complete a panel every 3 years with the total coverage completed every 12 years.

The CVS plot design will no longer be used once the first remeasurement cycle is completed in 2007.  The CVS grid has been reorganized into ten panels with 10% of the CVS grid locations visited every year, replacing the CVS plot with a National FIA plot design.  Replacement of the CVS plots began with the 2001 field season.  Full coverage should be completed after the 2011 field season.

The remeasurement datasets for the active file links are listed listed in green.  These files contain all four remeasurement panels.  All of these remeasurement datasets have been reconciled with the first round of measurements (see note at top).  The individual project datasets indicated in gray are no longer available.  The table shows the years of individual projects  for documentation purposes only.

Data for each National Forest are contained within a set of compressed dBase III files.  To download a file, click on the X to the right of the National Forest name, under the desired remeasurement panel in the table below.  Files sizes vary between 0.9 and 3.2 Mb.  These data are from remeasurement surveys only but will also contain a few first occasion plots due to changes in land ownership or in the criteria governing plot installation.
