Crystal Lake Trail 517

Access: From Winthrop drive on Okanogan County Road 9140 until it joins Forest Service Road 51. Drive 9.5 miles to the entrance to the trailhead.

Route Description: Long side hill and valley trail to a beautiful alpine lake. Two other lakes are nearby (no trail access - cross-county travel required). This trail burned over in 2003 fire so be prepared for windfallen snags on trail.

Highlights: This trail is a good opportunity for a 1-2 night backpack trip, offering some views of the Chewuch River and Mt. Barney area.

The country is mostly subalpine here with small meadow areas and bare rocky ridges.

Specific Hazards/Difficulties: Many camps around the lake shores have been overused in the past. Wear and trampling is occurring from stock grazed or tied too near the lake. Whenever you can, avoid the already heavily used areas and find more secluded, off-trail camps.

Season: July - September.

Maps: USGS: Mt. Barney.
             Green Trails: Coleman Peak.

Restrictions: Wilderness use restrictions apply.

Trailhead Facilities: Northwest Forest Pass is required. Stock ramp, hitch rail, and vault toilets.
