Cady Pass Trail 475

Access: From Winthrop, take Highway 20 west about 14 miles to the Mazama turn off and turn right. At Mazama turn left onto Okanogan County Road 9140, and drive about 18.5 miles to Hart's Pass. (County Road 9140 becomes Forest Service Road 5400 and is also known as Hart's Pass Road.) At Hart's Pass follow FS Road 5400-700 to Chancellor. The trailhead is approximately 5.5 miles from Hart's Pass. (CAUTION; Hart’s Pass Road is graveled, steep, and one lane with limited turnouts. Trailers are not allowed and defensive driving is a must. Drive slowly and be careful on corners. If you meet a large truck, let it pass on the inside if you can -- keeps the heavier vehicle off the outside edge of the road.)

Route Description: This trail follows the route of an old narrow gauge mining road that was used to access the most successful mine of the area - the Azurite Mine. The trail is mostly on open hillsides and ridge tops.

Highlights: From the pass, one can wander the ridge out to Cady Point, at 6542 feet, the site of an old fire lookout tower. The trail receives only light use, and may be brushy or hard to follow in places.

Specific Hazards/Difficulties: There is no trail bridge over Slate Creek at the beginning of the trail. This crossing may be difficult in high water.
