Christmas Tree Permits

Each year from October through December, the Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forests offices sell Christmas permits that allow you to cut a fresh Christmas tree on National Forest Lands. Each $5.00 permit allows you to cut one tree for your holiday festivities. It also helps the Forest Service thin tree stands that have a concentration of smaller trees.

It's a Christmas Tradition . . .the Journey for the perfect tree!

Christmas trees have been a tradition for a long time (since the early 1500's), and this year families will again center many activities around their own tannenbaum. Many families begin the Christmas season with a traditional journey out to the forest to find their special tree -- often times the adventure becomes an all day affair that includes a picnic!

Removing a tree from the Okanogan National Forest requires a $5 Christmas Tree Permit.(Two trees per household. Sorry, no refunds). Note: Christmas tree permits do not allow you to park in a Sno-Park. If you park in a Sno-Park, you must have a valid Washington State Sno-Park permit displayed in your vehicle.

You can cut down a tree, or dig it up to plant after the holidays. Remember the ground starts freezing as early as November. Please fill in the hole created by digging a live tree.

Some Okanogan National Forest roads will close December 1, to provide winter recreation opportunities along with winter wildlife escapement areas. Closed roads and areas are noted on the Okanogan National Forest Travel Plan Map. The Forest Service does not plow forest road during the winter months. Timber purchasers maintain roads on which they haul logs, and some of these routes are closed by the forest service for public safety.

Some local favorites for Christmas trees include Douglas-fir, spruce, sub alpine fir, and pine trees.

Enjoy your forest during the search for a special tree, and have a safe and Happy Holiday Season!

Permits are available at Forest Service offices and various businesses throughout Okanogan County.
