2011 Newsroom-EventsJuneCOMMENTS SOUGHT ON PROJECT TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND RESILIENCY OF NATIONAL FOREST LAND June 3, 2011 - Tonasket Ranger District is seeking review and comment on their recently released environmental assessment for Bailey Restoration Project. When complete, the project is intended to improve the health and resiliency of National Forest Land in the vicinity of Bailey Mountain, Devils Canyon, Bailey Creek and Aeneas Creek, about 22 miles east of Tonasket Washington. RAMSEY ROAD CLOSED BY DEBRIS FLOW June 2, 2011 - The Ramsey Road, north of Winthrop Washington has been closed by a debris flow. This is the fourth National Forest System road on the Methow Valley Ranger District to be closed this spring because of damage related to snowmelt and rain. FISHING DAY CELEBRATION AT BONAPARTE LAKE June 1, 2011 - Come Fish with us! Kids everywhere are invited to participate in Tonasket Ranger District’s 16th annual Fish Day Celebration Saturday June 11, 2011. MayDEBRIS FLOW ON NATIONAL FOREST TEMPORARILY ISOLATED CAMPERS May 27, 2011 - A recent debris flow northwest of Conconully, Washington left some campers temporarily cut-off from returning home. PRESCRIBED FIRE ACTIVITY IN MNT. HULL AREA May 19, 2011 - Today, Forest Service crews intend to burn about 60 acres of slash left behind after the Summit Timber sale. The treatment area is in the Mt. Hull area of the Tonasket Ranger District, approximately 14 miles northeast of Tonasket, WA. Smoke may be visible in the Mt. Hull area over the next few days. INTERGRATED WEED MANAGEMENT ON NATIONAL FOREST LANDS IN OKANOGAN COUNTY May 18, 2011 - This summer, US Forest Service will continue inventory and control work for noxious weeds on National Forest lands in Okanogan County to reduce existing weed populations and to reduce the risk of invasive species introduction and spread on Forest. FOREST TRAVELERS CAUTIONED ABOUT DEBRIS FLOWS SOFT ROADS May 16, 2011 - As winter eases its grip on National Forest lands in Okanogan County, visitors are cautioned to take extra care planning outings. Over the weekend, washouts, rockslides and debris flows were found on Forest Service system roads and some trails. FOREST SERVICE RESOURCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING TO DISCUSS CHELAN COUNTY PROJECT PROPOSALS May 13, 2011 - Members of the Resource Advisory Committee for the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will meet on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 to discuss potential funding for projects that benefit watersheds and forest-related resources on national forest lands in Chelan County. FOREST SERVICE RESOURCE ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING TO DISCUSS OKANOGAN COUNTY PROJECT PROPOSALS May 5 , 2011 - Members of the Resource Advisory Committee for the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will meet on Thursday, May 12, 2011 to discuss potential funding for projects that benefit watersheds and forest-related resources on national forest lands in Okanogan County. OFFICES CLOSED MAY 11 April 29, 2011—Several Forest Service offices on the Okanogan-Wenatchee N.F. will be closed on Wednesday, May 11, when most of the employees who work on the 4-million-acre national forest will attend a meeting. FUNDING HELPS OKANOGAN VALLEY STUDENTS STUDY TRIPOD FIRE EFFECTS April 29, 2011—The U.S. Forest Service recently announced that it had awarded more than $122,300 to four Pacific Northwest national forests to support conservation education programs, including almost $11,000 for high school students in low-income areas of the Okanogan Valley studying the effects of the 2006 Tripod Fire.
UNDERBURNING PROJECTS BEGIN ON THE METHOW VALLEY DISTRICT April 21, 2011 - This week, Forest Service crews will begin underburning projects on the Methow Valley Ranger District. Firefighters will be igniting 150 to 200 acres of the north block of the Hunter Mountain burn unit today and possibly tomorrow. FOUR FORESTS RECEIVE 'KIDS IN THE WOODS' FUNDING April 04, 2011– The U.S. Forest Service today awarded more than $122,300 to four Pacific Northwest forests in support of conservation education programs that will provide local community children more opportunities to experience the great outdoors, learn about nature, and build a lasting commitment to conservation and land stewardship. SPRING BURNING PLANS FOR THE METHOW VALLEY RANGER DISTRICT April 01, 2011 — National Forest Lands around Twisp and Winthrop Washington are scheduled for treatment with prescribed fire this spring. The treatments are designed to reduce fuel build-up and lessen the threat from wildland fire. SPRING BURNING PLANS FOR TONASKET RANGER DISTRICT April 01, 2011 — Spring burning conditions are being evaluated by the Tonasket Ranger District. Specialist are monitoring fuel moisture of accumulated forest debris and assessing weather conditions favorable for burning. WINTER HANGING ON AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS April 01, 2011 — In a typical year, many of the winter closures on US Forest Service roads in Okanogan County are lifted at the beginning of April. With this winter’s abundant snow, the closures will need to remain in place for a while longer. MarchFOREST SERVICE TO SEND CABIN OWNERS APPRAISAL FEE DETERMINATION NOTICES March 31, 2011—Forest Service officials are now sending appraisal determinations to recreation residence permit holders on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, in accordance with the 10-year appraisal cycle set forth by law. FebruaryCANADA LYNX STUDY IN NORTH CENTRAL WASHINGTON February 25, 2011 — Wildlife Biologists in Okanogan County are trapping and collaring Canada lynx this winter to gather information on the elusive cat. JanuaryRESTORATION WORK PROPOSED FOR BAILEY MOUNTAIN AREA January 12, 2011 — In response to a request by the Colville Confederated Tribes, the Tonasket Ranger District has developed a proposal for forest restoration work in the Bailey Mountain area, southeast of Tonasket, Washington. FOREST VISITORS ARE REMINDED TO CHECK FOR ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONS January 11, 2011 — In December of each year, there are many forest roads on the Methow Valley and Tonasket Ranger Districts that get closed for the winter to wheeled vehicles. Several of the closed roads are part of the Districts’ snowmobile trail system. FOREST IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS SOUGHT January 10, 2011 — Applications are being accepted for Title II projects designed to improve National Forest lands and the rural economies of local counties within the boundaries of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
