About the Okanogan National Forest

1897 - (February 22) Washington Forest Reserves proclaimed lands under the jurisdiction of the General Land Office, Department of Interior; Headquarters in Everett, then Tacoma.

1905 - Forest Reserves transferred to the Department of Agriculture; Forest Service formed from previous Bureau of Forestry

1907 - Forest Reserves renamed National Forests.

1908 - (July 1) Chelan National Forest proclaimed; headquarters in Chelan. Include land between Cascade crest and Okanogan River, and Canadian borders to the divide between the Chelan and Entiat Watersheds.

1910 - EntiatPhoto: Visitor receiving information from the Harts Pass Guard Watershed added to Chelan National Forest.

1911 - Okanogan National Forest formed from Chelan National Forest land in Okanogan County; headquarters in Okanogan. Chelan National Forest now include only Chelan and Entiat Watersheds. Chelan National Forest districts are Entiat, Sawtooth (later the Chelan), and Lake Chelan (later the Stehekin). >> More.

HISTORY

The Okanogan National Forest owes its origin to the "Washington's Birthday Reserves" proclamation signed on February 22, 1897, by President Grover Cleveland. This proclamation created 13 forest reserves covering 21 million acres in the western states (Mark Deleon).>> More.
