History of the Okanogan National Forest1911 - Okanogan National Forest districts are Conconully and Twisp. 1911-1915 - Conconully, Sweat Creek and Loomis districts cared from Conconully District. Twisp, Squaw Creek and Winthrop districts carved from Twisp District.
1920 - (Dec. 31) Okanogan and Chelan National Forest's combined as the Chelan National Forest; headquarters. Entiat district transferred the Wenatchee National Forest. Ranger Districts were Twisp, Squaw Creek, Winthrop, Loomis, Sweat Creek, Chelan and Stehekin. 1925 - Most of the Chelan National Forest in the Okanogan watershed, encompassing most of the Sweat Creek and Loomis District, except for lands in Salmon Creek, exchanged with the stat of Washington for un surveyed school lands lying within National Forest boundaries in the state. 1930 - Squaw Creek district absorbed by Twisp District. 1936 - Pasayten Ranger District carved from Winthrop district.
1942 - Tonasket Ranger District transferred to Chelan National Forest from Colville National Forests; Colville National Forest transferred to Region 1 in Missoula, Montana, and moves Supervisors Office from Republic to Colville. Boundary between Region 1 and Region 6 is now the Ferry-Okanogan County lines. 1943 - (Apr 23) Stehekin district consolidated with Chelan district. 1944 - Conconully district becomes Okanogan Ranger District. 1955 - (Jan 1) Chelan Ranger District (including older Stehekin district) transferred to Wenatchee National Forest. Chelan National name changed to Okanogan National. Okanogan district becomes Conconully district again. 1966 - (July 3) Pasayten district recombined with Winthrop district. North Cascades Smokejumper Base becomes an administrative unit apart from Twisp district. 1968 - (Oct 2) Congressional established of Pasayten Wilderness on Okanogan National Forest; North Cascades national Park. Ross Lake National Recreation Area formed from lands on Wenatchee and Mt Baker National Forest's and transferred to Department of Interior. National Park Service. Mt Baker National Forest lands lying east of Ross Lake and Wenatchee National Forest lands isolated by Lake Chelan National Recreation Area assigned to Okanogan National Forest.
1982 - Conconully district abolished and combined with Tonasket and Winthrop districts (originally proposed in 1969). 1984 Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness established on Okanogan and Wenatchee National Forest's. 1998 - Twisp and Winthrop Ranger districts consolidate into one Methow Valley Ranger District. Office located in Winthrop.
