The DecAID Flowchart

DecAID is data rich, and these data lie at many different levels, summarized in many different forms throughout the website. For example, there are summarized data from multiple wildlife studies displayed in cumulative species curves, specific data from individual wildlife studies, summarized vegetation inventory data, and life history information on insects and diseases that affect decayed wood structure. These flow charts were developed to give the user an overview of where key pieces are located, how to navigate to them, and how they relate to other pages within the DecAID website.

The charts are divided across 6 pages. For this explanatory document, the term “page” will refer to text pages in the pdf document, whereas “web page” or “homepage” will refer to electronic pages within the DecAID website. Each page of the flowchart shows how to get to different portions of the data in DecAID. The charts do not cover every link found within DecAID. Rather, they focus on the primary routes to the empirical data that are compiled and summarized in DecAID. There are many other DecAID web pages not shown in these charts which provide complementary information; the web pages shown on these charts are limited to those containing the wildlife use, vegetation, and insect & disease data/data summaries. Additional information found in the website can easily be located in reference to these key web pages.

Every flowchart page starts at the top with a box representing the DecAID homepage. In most cases you are then stepped, link by link, through different levels of data summaries to, ultimately, all the underlying descriptive data from the individual wildlife studies that were compiled for DecAID. On the way you can also step off to vegetation and insect and disease data summaries.

Each box in a chart represents an individual web page in DecAID; the box is titled to represent the corresponding web page. Most of the titles have a level number associated with them. Unfortunately, these levels are not yet identified on the DecAID web pages. As one proceeds from levels of smaller to larger numbers, they are generally moving from compiled data summaries to data more specific to individual studies, or “drilling down” to specific studies. All of the chart pages show the same path from the DecAID home page (Level 1) to the Summary Narrative web page (Level 3). It is from this Summary Narrative page where you can step off to all the different information on snags, down wood, and insects & diseases.

Just underneath the title bar of each box in the charts is a description of the information that can be found on that web page. Just under that text, within in the same box, you will find black boxes that represent links on that web page that take you to the next level or the next box down (as shown in the charts by the arrows). Quoted text in the black boxes represent the exact title of buttons or links on the web page, while unquoted text is a general description of the link (e.g. individual species codes), often found in text narrative or tables on the web page. When not obvious or when the web page is particularly large, the web page description in the chart boxes will explain where to find the noted links on that particular web page.
