Celebrating Wildflowers


All Year -  Berry Botanic Garden in Portland, Oregon offers a variety of classes on wildflower identification and growing, they have plant sales and they participate in local home and garden events. Look on their events calendar for activities this month: www.berrybot.org    

April-October, 2001  -   North Cascades Institute out of Sedro-Woolley, Washington offers classes in subjects ranging from edible plants to wildflower weekends to mycological forays and winter twig walks. April 28 and 29, 2001  -   Glide Wildflower Show takes place at the Glide Community Club in Glide, Oregon, 20 miles northeast of Roseburg on Highway 138. Event hours April 28 and 29 are 8-9 am for photographers only and general public 9am-5pm. Monday April 30 is open for school groups by previous arrangement. The show features botanical specimens arranged by family and identified by botanical and common names. Also included are displays on trees, weeds, lichens, edible and medicinal plants. A floral book and identification guide is available for a nominal fee. The site is wheelchair accessible. Suggested donation is $2.00/person. May 5-6, 2001 -  Wildflower Association of Shady Cove/Trail Show is scheduled in Shady Cove School in the multipurpose room, Cleveland St., approximately 25 miles east of Medford on Highway 62. The show runs from 10-4 both days. It is a non-profit organization fundraiser with 6 tables of seasonal wildflowers and weeds of the upper Rogue River area within a 12-mile radius of Shady Cove, a plant sale, and a Master Gardener to answer questions. A wildflower species list is available for sale. Along the walls will be special displays of noxious weeds, cones, a video of wildflowers in their natural habitat and other educational booths.   May 19-20, 2001  -  Celebrating Wildflowers at the Oregon Zoo, co-sponsored by BLM and USDA Forest Service. This year will be the third annual Celebrating Wildflowers event at the Oregon Zoo!  Wildflower exhibits and activities for kids will be located all throughout the Oregon Zoo, in downtown Portland Oregon, again this year. Cost is free once you papy the zoo entrance fee. Come experience Wildflower posters, crafts, games and prizes!  Our partners for this event include:  The Native Plant Society of Oregon, the Xerces Society, Berry Botanic Garden, Portland Parks, Hoyt Arboretum, Leach Botanical Gardens, Friends of Forest Park and Friend of Trees. May 20, 2001  -  Mt Pisgah Arboretum Wildflower Show is scheduled in Eugene, Oregon. This event, co-sponsored by the Emerald Chapter of Native Plant Society, is a fund-raiser for the Arboretum. Event hours are 10-4. The event features a display of wildflowers from Lane county (coast to crest), music, a child activities area, an awesome plant sale, a book booth, food booths, environmental non-profit booths, wildflower walks on-site and much more. Last year the theme was gardening with native plants. This year the theme is carnivorous, mycotrophic and parasitic plants. Suggested donation is $3 per individual and $5 per family.   June 15-22, 2001   -   Siskiyou Field Institute, Westside Cascades offers classes in many botanical fields. 2001 course topics include: Bryophytes, Plant Identification, Geo-ecology, Ethnobotany, Birding, Serpentine Plant Ecology, Conservation Ecology, botanizing workshops and more. June 23rd and 24th, 2001  -    Darrington Wildflower Festival is scheduled for in beautiful Darrington Washington. This is about 30 miles east of Arlington, 45 miles northeast of Everett and about 1.5 hours from Seattle, accessed via Highway 530.  The theme is wildflowers and native plants, but it really is an arts and crafts fair.  There are lots of arts and crafts for sale, food, entertainment, native plant walks, kid's activities, informational booths, and speakers. Time is 10:00-5:00 Saturday and 10:00-4:00 on Sunday. For more information contact Ann Risvold at (360) 436-1155.  

July 4, 2001 -  Irene Hollenbeck Memorial Wildflower Display put on by the Siskiyou Chapter of the Native Plant Society at Lithia Park in Ashland. The event features samples of area wildflowers and photo displays. Event hours are 10-4. The event is free to the public.   Celebrating Wildflowers: Educators Guide to the Appreciation and Conservation of Native Plants (222 pp) is a comprehensive text explaining how to develop a program, provides field and classroom activities and plant identification cards.   Karl Urban Wildflower drawings A site on the Umatilla NF where you can download one or all wildflower coloring pages along with coloring guides that show you what shade of color the flowers are in real life.
