Willamette National Forest

Friday June 1st. 

Wildflower hike to Tombstone Prairie to look at snowmelt species. This is an easy 2-mile roundtrip hike. Bring a lunch, good boots (in case of snow patches), and water. Meet at Sweet Home Ranger District at 9:00 am. Please call Alice Smith at (541) 367-9215 to sign up.

Saturday June 23rd

Field trip to study beargrass with Dr. Nan Vance of the Pacific Northwest Research Station and Dr. Peter Bernhardt of the University of St. Louis. Come learn about Nan’s study to determine sustainable levels of beargrass harvest and help Peter collect insects for his beargrass pollination study. Trip will be a full day with some walking, although plots are close to the road and on relatively flat ground. We will be walking through clearcuts, so good boots are essential. Bring lunch and water.  Meet at South Eugene High School at 8:00 a.m. and return by 5:00 p.m. Contact Jenny Lippert at (541) 465-6321 to sign up.

Saturday July 7th.

Wildflower hike to Tidbits Mountain. This is a moderate 3-mile roundtrip hike with a 1000 foot elevation gain. Meet at Sweet Home Ranger District at 9:00 am. Bring a lunch, good boots, water and sunscreen/protective clothing. Please call Alice Smith at (541) 367-9215 to sign up.

Saturday, July 21. 

4th of July Butterfly Count: Browder Ridge, central Cascades. The meadows of the central Cascades explode with wildflowers and butterflies at this time of year. Browder Ridge, on the Willamette National Forest near the Santiam Pass, has a mixture of habitats, from mixed conifer forest to expansive meadows. Join the first ever 4th of July Butterfly Count for this part of Oregon. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at trailhead. NOTE: Browder Ridge trail is moderately difficult and involves a steady gain in elevation. We plan on returning to Eugene by 6 p.m. Meet at the Campbell Senior Center parking lot (155 High Street, Eugene) at 8:00 am. Space is limited to 25 people. Co-leaders: Eric Wold and Neil Björklund. Noxious weed pull in wildflower heaven; for all of you who love Iron Mountain’s wonderous diversity, here’s your chance to help keep it wondrous. Meet at Sweet Home Ranger District at 8:00 am. Friday October 19th

Mushroom walk in the fungi-diverse forests along Hackleman Creek. Easy hike of about two miles. Meet at Sweet Home Ranger District at 9:00 am.
