Southside Climbing Conditions – June 5, 2009

Note to climbers:
Due to staff vacancies, we are unable to update climbing conditions as often as we have in the past. Other websites exist that provide anecdotal trip reports that may or may not prove helpful. Please check the NWAC for up to date snow and weather conditions expected on Mt. Hood.

Short Term:
See Northwest Weather and Avalanche center http://www.nwac.us/products/SABSEA

Also some good photos of the Pearly Gate's chutes have been posted on the Cascade Climber web site in the last week or two.

Longer term:
The re-alignment of the Hogsback is still resulting in a steep traverse route up and through the Pearly Gates. Many climbers are taking the traverse west of the Hogsback and using the Old Chute also known as the Mazamas route as an alternate. This route is more exposed than the traditional south side route was. Reports indicate this route may be slightly less steep than last year. Those that have climbed Pearly Gates have said the right gully is slightly better than the left gully.

Disclaimer:
Conditions on the mountain change rapidly.  This does not point out all hazards.  Don't expect that what is described here is what you will find.  These reports are from competent climbers who are sharing their observations at one point in time.  You need to be evaluating conditions and weather throughout your climb.
