RECREATION PASSES

A Recreation Pass is a pass for the use of many improved trailheads, picnic areas, boat launches and interpretive sites on National Forests throughout Oregon and Washington. Recreation Pass Required signs are posted at participating sites.

Revenues from pass sales go directly to maintaining and improving the trails, land and facilities you own and enjoy.

PERMITS

Wilderness Permits

All visitors to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness from May 15 to October 31 need a permit. Day-use visitors may obtain a free, self-issue permit at ranger stations and trailheads. A copy of the permit is carried with you and a portion is deposited in the box at the trailhead.

Overnight visitors to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness can obtain a free, self-issue permit in the same fashion as above, except for visitors who plan to go to the Enchantment Lakes area in the Wenatchee National Forest.

Enchantment Permit Changes for 2009 Season [August 7, 2008]
The Wenatchee River Ranger District announced today a fee increase for overnight camping in the Enchantment area of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, beginning in 2009. The Enchantment Permit Area is comprised of five zones that encompass Snow, Colchuck, Stuart, Eightmile, and Caroline Lakes and the trails leading to them. Special Forest Products Permits

Special Forest Products is the term for "non-timber forest products" limited to vegetative material and include such items as grasses, seeds, roots, bark, berries, mosses, ferns, edible mushrooms, tree seedlings, transplants, and poles.

Permits for predetermined personal use levels are available free of charge.

You must have possession of a 2400-1 permit, 2400-8 permit, and/or load tags to collect and remove any special forest products from the National Forest above incidental amounts. Incidental amounts defined as “incurred casually…”, (i.e., if you are planning on going out and collecting, you will need a permit).

Fuel Wood Permits

• A personal-use permit is required—the minimum charge is $20 for 2 cords of wood, plus $10 for each additional cord, up to a limit of 6 cords per household, per year.

• Obtain permits at any of the Forest Service offices in Sedro Woolley, Darrington, Verlot, Skykomish, North Bend, or Enumclaw.

• The amount of fuel wood available is very limited, though demand is high.

• Best MBS areas for finding fuel wood: Darrington and Skykomish Ranger Districts. Please call ahead for availability.

The fuel wood supply is extremely limited in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Nearly 95 percent of the land area is allocated to special reserves, to protect late-successional and old-growth forests and riparian areas. In these areas, no removal or dead and/or down wood is allowed—and no fuel wood may be gathered. This means what fuel wood is available is sold and removed quickly. In this National Forest, the Darrington and Skykomish Ranger Districts offer the best chance of finding fuel wood.

Most fuel wood gatherers scout out a fuel wood location first—generally along roads, or across roads within the road right-of-way. Next, stop by your local Ranger District office. The Forest Service staff there will determine if fuel wood can be removed from your location, and will sell you a permit.

Fuel wood gatherers may want to visit the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, which has more available wood. Note that there are no commercial-use sales of fuel wood in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie.
