FOREST ROAD & TRAIL CONDITIONS

The following reports are kept current through forest visitor reports. Please call ranger stations to give your report after your hike, send Email, or use our comment form.

Please contact the Ranger District or Visitor Center offices for detailed conditions.

Road & Trail Status Definitions

  • OPEN - No restrictions, forest visitors can drive the road or hike the trail.
  • PARTIAL - Forest visitors can only dirve part of the road or hike part of the trail because of snow, trail damage, wildlife closures, etc. somewhere ahead on the trail.
  • CLOSED - Road or trail closed because of forest closures, wildlife closure, road damage, gates or barriers. Forest visitors can not drive any part of the road or hike any part of the trail.
  • SNOW - Road or trail is snow covered but still open.
  • INACCESSIBLE - Road or trail not reachable because of road damage or closures on roads or trails leading to it.

This will be in effect for 8-10 months. Starting June 22, 2009.

Current access to Forest Service Road 38 (Middle Fork Nooksack Road) is from the Mt. Baker Highway (SR 542) onto Mosquito Lake Road through the town of Welcome, instead of from Hwy 9 at the town of Acme.

Elev. gain 2600’. Hike Trail #1003 (the Middle Fork Trail) for 3.4 miles to Trail #1013.1. This trail will drop you down on the north side of Snow Lake connecting with the Snow Lake Trail. There are three major debris fields and windfall sections with approx. 10 trees (12” inches or more in diameter) downed. This trail is pretty rugged and steep in places.  Not recommended for mountain bikes. No campfires. Dogs must be leashed!

Dogs are often reported missing; leashes are encouraged.  Campfire regulations in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness are as follows:  

Campfires are allowed below 4,000 ft. in elevation west of the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range and below 5,000 ft. in elevation east of the crest. Other campfire areas may be restricted due to high fire danger, high use and/or no fuel.
