Mt. Hood National Forest and
Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (Oregon Side)

Mt. Hood National Forest and Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area released the Record of Decision and Final Environmental Impact Statement on March 20, 2008. The Record of Decision culminates over four years of intensive planning and analysis for invasive plant treatments, and we believe this decision will help retain healthy native plant communities that are diverse and resilient. We have selected Alternative 2, the Proposed Action, for implementation. Our decision approves the implementation of the proposed site-specific invasive plant treatments. If you have any questions on this document, please contact Jennie O'Connor, Team Leader at (503) 668-1645 or jmoconnor@fs.fed.us.

The Mt. Hood National Forest and Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon are proposing treatment on 208 sites (approximately 13,000 acres). The purpose of this project is to reverse the negative impacts caused by the invasive plants and to restore ecological communities and function at the impacted treatment sites in a cost-effective manner that meets current management direction. The establishment and spread of invasive plants can be slowed, with timely action. The EIS was developed to treat invasive plants and to utilize the new tools and management direction in Pacific Northwest Region Invasive Plant Program - Preventing and Managing Invasive Plants Record of Decision and Final Environmental Impact Statement (www.fs.fed.us/r6/invasiveplant-eis/).

The Proposed Action would utilize integrated weed management treatments. The treatments include: 30 acres of herbicide only treatment; 50 acres of manual and mechanical treatments; 310 acres of herbicide plus mechanical treatments; 327 acres of herbicide plus manual treatments; 1510 acres of herbicide plus manual, mechanical, and cultural; 10,736 acres of herbicide plus manual and mechanical treatments. Additional acres will be added through an early detection / rapid response mechanism. All sites have an associated restoration strategy. Implementation is expected to reduce the rate of spread of existing and future infestations of invasive plants on the Forest and Scenic Area.
