Recreational ActivitiesDrivingDriving for PleasureFall Colors
The hardwood forests of the eastern United States offer a huge landscape upon which color is widely splashed. In the evergreen forests of the west, like the Winema National Forest, the colors are every bit as vibrant, but confined to small dabs on the green background of the forest. As you enjoy a drive around the forest in the fall, look for riparian areas (low areas where larger amounts of water influence the vegetation). There you will find the Winema's colorful hardwoods. On October 10, 2000, the colors were just getting started. The photo above and to the left was taken on Sevenmile Road which is located off of the north end of Westside Road. Westside Road parallels the west side of Upper Klamath Lake. The photo to the right was taken along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway All American Road just north of Highway 140 on the Westside Road. The weekend of October 23 and 24 was the peak of the color on the Winema in 1999. The photos below were taken on October 20, 1999 on the Chiloquin Ranger District in an area north of the Sprague River. The shores of the Sprague River offer one of the more spectacular color spots and the Sprague River and Williamson River Roads east of Chiloquin will take you through the heart of it.
