the largest lake on the central
Oregon Coast. The lake is
very popular for boating
and fishing. The shoreline
tends to be brushy and mostly
in private ownership. For

anglers. Fishing for bass
is best in the spring and
for yellow perch in the summer.
The north shore of the lake

The Pacific
Ocean, the largest body of
water known to mankind, forms
the western boundary of the
Siuslaw National Forest and
Oregon Dunes National Recreation
Area. Although some people
fish the surf from the beach,
most venture forth in small
boats from the mouths of
the larger rivers and bays.
Charter boats operate from
Charleston on Coos Bay, Winchester
Bay (Salmon Harbor) at the
mouth of the Umpqua River,
Newport on Yaquina Bay, and
sometimes from Florence at
the mouth of the Siuslaw
River. Contact the appropriate
Chamber of Commerce for more
information. |

Formerly under
private ownership, Hall Lake
and the surrounding land
has been recently acquired
by the Oregon Dunes National
Recreation Area. The lake
is favorite among local residents
because of its sandy swimming
beach, adjacent sand dune,
and sheltered location. A
new day-use area is under
construction that will include
a picnic shelter and several
short hiking trails. One
of these trails will lead
to nearby Shuttpelz Lake. |

Shuttpelz Lake

![[Photo]: Shuttpelz Lake](../siu/images/shuttpelzlake.jpg) |
Shuttpelz Lake is a small, lightly fished
lake just north of Hall Lake. A small waterfall prevents
fish from moving upstream to Shuttpelz from Hall, thereby
creating a somewhat unique situation of isolated native
cutthroat trout. Fishing is catch-and-release only.
There is good bank access on the western shore and many
anglers pack a float tube or small raft to fish the
brushy eastern shore. The lake is a short 0.5 mile hike
from the new day-use area at Hall Lake. |
