White pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) is an exotic disease to North America that affects all five-needle pines (such as sugar pine, western white pine, and whitebark pine). The five-needle pines of North America are among the most susceptible white pines to this disease. more

Larch Containerized Seed Orchards

In 1991, USDA Forest Service geneticists and resource specialists from PNW Research Station, several National Forests, and Dorena Genetic Resource Center met to discuss the potential of using containerized seed orchards (CSOs) for western larch to meet the need for seed in eastern Oregon and eastern Washington. It was decided to establish two small prototype larch CSOs at Dorena and to develop the technology based on research elsewhere with various conifer species. more
