TEU are developed by resource specialists through the integration of an ecosystem's elements, i.e.: soils, geology, geomorphology, climate and potential natural vegetation. At LT/LTP scales, these elements are used to describe and define "ecological types" (ET) that in turn are used to describe and define TEU (see the discussion of this in FSH 2090 for work done to date and, for new mapping projects, the draft TEUI Technical Guide, 1909.xx). TEU are mapped at different analysis scales in accordance with the National Hierarchical Framework of Ecological Units (Cleland et al., 1997), however the LT/LTP scale ecological units are managed on a single GIS coverage. Ecological units (terrestrial and aquatic) are the inventory targets in current Forest Service manual and budget direction. SMU have traditionally been developed by soil scientists following methods and procedures specified by the National Soil Survey Handbook (NSSH). Repeating landscape patterns, based on observable features such as landforms, are identified and delineated. Soils on identifiable components within these delineations are described, classified and used to develop ranges of soil characteristics. Relationships between the observable features and the associated soils are used to develop map unit concepts "Map Type" will distinguish between TEUI and SRI coverages in the Oracle views. Map Type "ECUN" identifies a TEUI coverage developed following either the FSH 2090 or FSH 1909.xx Methodology. Map Type "SOIL" identifies a SRI coverage developed following the NSSH Methodology. These are nationally defined methodologies. Data standards for hierarchical map and classification level codes for both TEUI and SRI are maintained by the NRIS Terra data stewards. Currently, while legacy SRI coverages are relatively complete, there are significant gaps in potential natural vegetation, geology, and/or geomorphology data sets on many Forest Service units. Despite this, the long-term goal is to meet TEUI standards (defined in the draft 1909.xx) for mapping at the primary base series scale (1:24,000, 1:63,360 for Alaska) throughout the National Forest System.
