The most useful resource for the 1:100,000 scale is the state geology map of Oregon (Walker and MacLeod, 1991). Since scaling and projection has been an issue with the digital version of the state geology map, the Level V Ecoregion map produced for the Blue Mountains (Clarke and Bryce, 1997) is used as the basis for geology in most of the area. The Ecoregion geologic base is a composite of the most current geologic maps at the time of production. Most of the Malheur and parts of the Wallowa-Whitman NF lie outside the limits of anadromous fisheries so were not covered by the Eco V map. A similar composite map of the Southern Blue Mountains was produced by Applied Geologic Studies from Denver (AGS, 1999). The parts of Baker, Unity and Pine ranger districts not covered by the either of those two maps had an existing Terrestrial Ecological Unit Inventory with units based in geology. The TEUI became the basis for geology in those areas. The remaining areas not covered by those three sources of coverage were east of the Snake River in Idaho. A level IV Ecoregion map was used in that area for geologic boundaries.

The potential vegetation maps produced by each of the three forests were used as the basis for LTA vegetation delineations (Appendix 3). These maps were developed from interpretations of existing vegetation data sources, including stand exams to produce Plant Association Group (PAG) maps (Tables 9-15, ROD-12/18/98). Many PAG polygons were too small to be recognized at a scale of 1:100,000. Complexes of PAGs were established where a repeating pattern was observed during delineation
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
Distribution of the PAGs was often in complexes of two or more types. The new vegetation polygons were designated by the two most dominant components of the complex where complexes were used. Otherwise they were given the dominant PAG label, meaning it was more than about 80% of the polygon. Vegetation was the main source of variability in the Landtype Map.
The first level of delineation on the 1:100,000 scale base maps produced a map unit size comparable to a Landtype unit with an average of 211 acres. A total of 674 map units were recognized, many with only one or two occurrences. This degree of detail is desirable for watershed analysis. Forest planning however, required more simplicity for resource allocation. Each of the three factors of mapping was aggregated into groups with similar character and behavior. The new combinations resulted in a legend with only 103 map units for the 5.6 million acres on the three forests. The grouped Landtypes became the Landtype Association map
