The county boundaries were digitized using ArcView 3.2a with the county MrSID DRG mosaic as the background. Bear Lake County was digitized first. Adjacent counties were digitized with the append feature in ArcView 3.2a. When all Zone 12 counties were digitized, the shapefile was projected to Zone 11 utilizing the ArcView Projection Utility Wizard. The remainder of the counties were then digitized.

BLM contractor used the cited sources( see source information) to extract the desired line work and create the new coverage. This was accomplished in ARCEDIT using the SELECT & PUT commands. The coverage was then cleaned, built for topology and projected to Lambert Conformal Conic. All line work was ultimately snapped to GCDB points where available.

Added FIPS field from original Counties_R6 dataset. Process: Created new temporary feature class with Name field as length 12, since it is length 11 and 2 counties in WA have 12 character names (Grays Harbor and Pend Oreille) Populated the temp fc using the Append tool, and fixed the 2 county names changed Name field in the counties_r6 fc to uppercase, to match the county fc Joined the 2 fc's on the Name field Exported the joined fc Edited the exported fc to remove duplicate rows(when 2 or 3 states had the same county name, export came over with the fips code for each state. Also the counties_r6 fc had multipart features for the Puget Sound counties in Washington (they had islands). Deleted the fields from the counties_r6 fc in the exported fc, except FIPS. Also had to keep the length and area fields from the counties_r6 fc; the software would not allow them to be deleted, so they were turned off in the display. (Shape_Length_1 and Shape_Area_1, DO NOT USE THESE FIELDS FOR THE LENGTH AND AREA OF THE FEATURES!)
