Abstract:
Subdivisions within a watershed. Subwatersheds are the sixth level (12-digit) of the hydrologic unit hierarchy. This file contains Hydrologic Unit boundaries and codes for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The data are a seamless national representation of Hydrologic Unit boundaries at HU_12 levels. Geometry of all delineations is from the NRCS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) state coordination efforts. The feature class field structure is from USGS National Hydrography Dataset Hydrologic Units (HU) dataset. WBD attribute records for each hydrologic unit were populated into the HU structure. Not all WBD attributes could be moved into the HU structure because there was not a place in the HU structure for some WBD attributes.
USFS Natural Resources Information System (NRIS) imported the WBD certified HU_12 data into USGS HU data structure. For Alaska, preliminary data for the HU_12 are available for Southcentral and Southeast Alaska subregions only.
Purpose:
The data for the lower 48 states were developed based on the certified WBD to provide the USFS national forests with national hydrologic drainage delineations at six aquatic hierarchical levels. The data for Alaska are currently an interim product meant to be used only until NRCS releases certified data for Alaska.

This data includes hydrologic delineation boundaries. It is aquatic, spatial data from the entire United States and its source is from the USDA-NRCS and USGS. Completed watershed boundary data was downloaded from their Watershed Boundary Delineations website the lower 48 states and Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. The data for the state of Alaska is preliminary, uncertified data to be used only until USGS makes the certified data available for Alaska.
