Abstract:

Data describes where Port-Orford-cedar exists on U.S. Forest Service Region 6 lands.

Purpose:

Provide a seamless POC personal geodatabase for Region 6 of Port-Orford-cedar with and without Phytophthora lateralis. Areas covered include Biscuit Fire, Siuslaw National Forest, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Rogue River - Siskiyou National Forest and Ranger Districts and Oregon Caves National Monument.

Supplemental_Information:

The perimeter of the 2002 Biscuit Fire includes lands administered by the Siskiyou National Forest, the Six Rivers National Forest and the Medford District Bureau of Land Management. This Port-Orford-cedar mapping effort was initiated by Frank Betlejewski, Port-Orford-cedar Program Manager, source aerial photos utilized in this effort are stored at his office. The enterprise geospatial dataset resides on the Rogue River/Siskiyou National Forest. March/April 2008 - Updates to the POC personal geodatabase were completed for a pilot study on the Siuslaw National Forest using 2006 air photos displaying 2006 POC field survey data provided by Region 6 of the Forest Service. April 2008 - Began updates to the POC personal geodatabase for the Powers Ranger District of the Siskiyou National Forest using 1997 air photos displaying 2007 POC field survey data provided by Region 6 of the Forest Service.

From a comparison of the July 2004 source photography with that taken in September 2002, it appears that the distinctive color of Port Orford Cedar shows up better on the latter. I suspect this is due primarily to the lower light angle of the 2002 photos since they were taken later in the year. Color mix and exposure are probably factors also. In Oregon the orthophoto base map allowed plotting of photomapped polygons to an estimated accuracy of about 100 feet. In California, the accuracy is about the same when the existing Inter-agency Range-wide Port-Orford-cedar polygons were used as a base for plotting surviving Port-Orford-cedar polygons. In areas (California) where there were no existing polygons the accuracy of plotting polygons decreases or the error increased to an estimated 250 feet.
