Abstract:
Original points dervied from FSTopo and edited as needed. The FSTopo database was originally populated with Cartographic Feature File (CFF) data. CFF data were derived from the standard Forest Service Primary Base Series (PBS) or Single Edition Series (SES) map as part of the Forest Service National Geographic Information System Plan.
Purpose: Map administrative sites on the Rogue River - Siskiyou NF.

Features are represented as lines or points with one or more attribute codes attached. Attribute accuracy was tested by one or more of the following methods in accordance with the data vintage: feature comparison with aerial photography, color display of CFF on interactive computer graphic system; manual comparison of the source with hard-copy plots; symbolized display of CFF on an interactive computer graphic system; selected attributes that could not be visually verified on plots or on screen were interactively queried and verified on screen. All attribute data conform to the attribute codes as of the date of digitizing. Data completeness reflects the content of the original source graphic, digital correction guide information, stereoscopic source, and/or monoscopic source, supplemented with cadastral source information. The completeness of the file meets PBS and SES standards for feature content. The original Cartographic Feature File (CFF) was digitized from either the Primary Base Series (PBS) quadrangle or, if not available, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map series quadrangle. Digitizing was performed by GSTC personnel or through contracting. PBS and SES maps are created from USGS topographic maps used as sources (bases), then modified and/or updated to meet Forest Service needs. The original digital data were produced by one of the following methods: 1) Scanning a stable-based copy of the graphic materials. The scanning process captured the digital data at a scanning resolution of 0.001 inch or less; the resulting raster data were then manually digitized and attributed on an interactive computer editing station. 2) Manually digitizing from a stable-based copy of the graphic material using a digitizing table to capture the digital data. Typically, digitizing tables had a resolution of .001 inch, with a statistical repeatability of .003 inch. Attribution was performed as the data were digitized on an interactive edit station after digitizing was completed. Four control points corresponding to the four corners of the quadrangle were used for registration during data collection. A four-parameter affine transformation was performed from the processing software internal coordinates to State Plane grid coordinates. The CFF data were checked for position and attributes by one or more of the following processes: comparing plots of the digital data to the graphic source, comparing the digital data to the digital raster scan, comparing the digital data to the graphic source. Resulting files may have undergone revision at later dates. The update revision uses a variety of sources, including Digital Orthophoto Quad (DOQ) imagery, stereoscopic imagery, cadastral information, or other ancillary image or data sources, along with field-prepared correction guides.
CFF attribute codes are used to describe the cartographic symbology characteristics of the line elements.

The Forest Service's Cartographic Feature Files have been collected over a period of almost 20 years. During that time, the CFF have evolved as the standards, and specifications have changed and as quality has improved. Accordingly, CFF data has been classified by vintages.
The following is an overview of the thematic layers that are represented in FSTopo data. Unless otherwise specified, the current source is the Cartographic Production System (CPS) database, derived from Cartographic Feature File (CFF) data. Planned future sources are listed. A more comprehensive description of these layers can be found in the SEQ specifications. In areas where polygons have not yet been generated, outlines will be displayed for certain features such as large buildings, open water, etc.
Buildings (polygons, lines, points): Most buildings are portrayed according to traditional SEQ specifications. The planned future source is undetermined.
Built-up Areas (polygons): Urban areas where only landmark buildings are portrayed. The planned future source is undetermined.
Contours (lines): Generated from National Elevation Data (NED) and portrayed according to traditional SEQ standards.
Culture (polygons, lines, points): Manmade features that are not portrayed in the Buildings, Recreation, or Transportation themes. The planned future source is undetermined.
Drainage (polygons, lines, points): The planned future source is National Hydrographic Data (NHD).
Landforms (polygons, lines): Surface features that have geographic significance according to SEQ specifications. The planned future source is undetermined.
Ownership (polygons): Portrays land that is not owned by the Forest Service within the Forest boundary. The planned future source is Automated Lands Project (ALP).
Railroads (lines): The planned future source is undetermined.
Recreation Facilities: Forest-oriented recreational facilities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trailheads, and Forest Service offices. The planned future source is Infra Structures.
Survey (lines, points): Contains jurisdictional boundaries, Public Land Survey System (PLSS)/corners, monuments, spot elevations, and other related features. The planned future source is Automated Lands Project (ALP).
Transportation (lines, points): Contains features ranging from trails to highways. The planned future source is Infra Travel Routes.
Text: The planned future source is undetermined.
Woodland (polygons): This is not portrayed because the legacy data are over forty years old. This layer may be introduced in the future if cost-effective methods of production and revision can be identified.
