Abstract:
CLIPPED TO COLVILLE NATIONAL FOREST EXTENT 08/10/2011. A seamless geodatabase annotation feature dataset comprised of 7 feature classes and designed for optimal use at a scale of 1:63360. This Geodatabase contains an ArcGIS 9.x seamless annotation feature class that is appropriate for 1/2 inch = 1 mile scale applications, and which includes all 1:24,000-scale quad maps covering the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region (Region 6).
Purpose:
The purpose of this Annotation Geodatabase is to provide the USDA Forest Service with feature annotation for 1/2 inch = 1 mile scale forest maps. The Pacific Northwest Region requires the use of digital annotation files that comply with standard cartographic specifications for map production purposes.

Quad-based text files, originally developed by GSTC for the Primary Base Series (PBS) or Single Edition Series (SES), were imported into a geodatabase of regional extent. The text files contained all text that appeared on the most current PBS or SES. Definition of Primary Base Series Map and Single Edition Series Map described below: The Primary Base Series (PBS) is composed of over 10,600 quadrangle maps covering National Forest System lands. The PBS is constructed from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic quadrangle maps and meets associated standards for content. Additional Forest Service information is included on PBS maps. Eight feature categories are represented as transportation, hydrography, political and administrative boundaries, Public Land Survey System, Forest Service land ownership, surface and cultural features, map text, and topography (elevation contours). PBS maps for the coterminous United States cover areas of 7.5-minutes latitude by 7.5-minutes longitude at 1:24,000-scale. Alaska PBS cover areas of 15-minutes latitude by 20-22.5-minutes longitude at 1:63,360-scale. PBS maps are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards (NMAS). For the horizontal component, the NMAS states that 90% of well-defined points on a map fall within 1/50th of an inch, at map scale for 1:24,000 and 1:63,360, in relation to the actual position on the ground. Under an Interagency Agreement between the Forest Service and the USGS, PBS maps produced by the Geospatial Service and Technology Center are printed in full color and distributed by the USGS. These maps are often referred to as Single Edition Series (SES) maps. Road numbers, trail numbers, and recreation site names were imported from individual forest datasets instead of the quad-based text files. In the cases where no quad text file existed, the annotation was compiled manually from the most current hard copy quad map available.
