Winter Recreation Areas

Dutchman Flat Area

Deschutes National Forest
Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District

The Dutchman Sno-Park is very congested and parking is limited during holidays and weekends. The lot fills early on these days. Overnight camping is not permitted at Dutchman Flat Sno-Park.

New use regulations are in effect for the Winter 2004-2005 season. Here is a map of the Dutchman/Tumalo Winter Use Area (large pdf, slow to load) boundaries and trails for the 2004-2005 season. More details will be coming soon.

The Dutchman area is shared use (motorized/nonmotorized uses) and is often busy on weekends with snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and snow play. All recreationists need to practice extra patience and adhere closely to trail etiquette. Skiers and snowshoers are to stay to the right side when using snowmobile (orange diamonds) trails. Ski trails (blue diamonds) are closed to snowmobile use; though in most areas between the trails snowmobile use is permitted. Snowmobilers, please slow to 10-20 mph when passing skiers/snowshoers.

Snowmobile Trails

Access to 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, Sisters and Crescent Ranger District snowmobile trails, snowmobile warming shelters, Elk Lake Resort.

Larger vehicles and larger trailers are recommended to use Wanoga or Edison Sno-Parks. The lower and mid-elevation snowmobile trails offer good access to the upper elevation trails and areas. Please camp at the lower snow parks to avoid overcrowding at this congested area.

Obtain an area trail map and familiarize yourself with the areas closed to snowmobiles/atvs. These areas include: The Three Sisters Wilderness, Todd Lake, part of Tumalo Mt./Bend Municipal Watershed and the Mt. Bachelor Ski Area. Access to Mt. Bachelor's Sunrise Lodge is permitted from the east.

Snowmobile Area Maps

The trails in this area are closed to dogs for the following reasons:

  • To prevent collisions between dogs and people on trails.
  • To reduce sanitation problems on the trails and at shelters.
  • To reduce conflicts between users over dog behavior.

With a permit, controlled working dogs in harness are allowed on groomed snowmobile trails only. Permits are available free of charge from the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger Station. Call (541) 388-5664 for info on obtaining the free permit.
