South Sister Climbers' Trail -- Trail #36

Deschutes National Forest - Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District
Current
Conditions
ACCESS: This trail begins at Devil's
Lake Trailhead, 29 miles west of Bend just off Century Drive.
DESCRIPTION: This primitive trail climbs steeply
over rugged terrain and loose cinders to the summit of South Sister.
Now dormant, this composite volcano last erupted about 2,000 years
ago. Rapidly changing and harsh high mountain weather requires thorough
preparation for this climb, even when the skies are blue at the
trailhead. Early season snow climbs require an ice axe and knowledge
of its use for safety. Avoid weekends, if possible on this overused
trail.
NOTE: The trail enters the Three
Sisters Wilderness Area shortly after leaving the trailhead. Wilderness
Permits are required for both day-use and overnight travel in the
Wilderness from Memorial Day Weekend until Oct. 31. Permits are available
at the trailhead.
Camping
at Green Lakes, 4.4 miles from trailhead, is restricted to designated
campsites only, typically full by Friday evening each weekend. Campfires
are not permitted within 1/4 mile of the lakes to protect
the fragile ecosystem.
