Cold Springs Guard Station rests in a serene corner of the dry meadow ecology near Big Summit Prairie.  It served a special role as a switchboard station connecting phone calls between Prineville and Paulina, as well as various fire lookouts and guard stations. Old growth ponderosa pines and sagebrush meadows are unique to the setting.  The diverse habitat supports a variety of watchable wildlife including antelope, deer, elk, geese, and sandhill cranes.  In late spring and early summer, the prairie and surrounding forest is resplendent with wildflowers.  Hiking mountain biking, and fishing can be enjoyed in the vicinity. To reach Cold springs, travel 15 miles east from Prineville on Highway 26.  Turn right at the junction to Ochoco Ranger Station (County Road 23) and travel nine miles to the junction of forest Roads 22 and 42.   Stay (right) on FR 42 and proceed approximately 22 miles.  Just after crossing the North Fork of the Crooked River, turn left on FR 30 and proceed approximately 1.5 miles.  Signs to Cold Springs will be visible.

Please note: The Ochoco National Forest is considering increasing the rental fee at Cold Springs Guard Station, effective 2010. The increased recreation fee would enable us to better maintain and preserve this historic facility, provide better service to the users, and enhance and protect the naturalness of the area. We encourage comments or questions regarding this proposed change: Ochoco National Forest, Lookout Mountain District, Prineville OR (541) 416-6500"
