Project Documents - West Tumbull Hazard Fuel Reduction Project
Deschutes National Forest
Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District
Project Description
The West Tumbull Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project is proposed to reduce flammable fuels
within the Tumalo Creek drainage and adjacent to Forest Roads 4601 (Skyliners Road) and 4603.
The project area encompasses approximately 4,590 acres of both National Forest and
privately owned lands. All treatments are within the wildland urban interface (WUI) as defined
in the Greater Bend and the East West Deschutes County Community Wildfire Protection Plans.
The project is planned under the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003 (HFRA).
The purpose of the project is to improve protection to adjacent private lands, public and private
structures and facilities, and infrastructure from wildfire events by increasing the number of acres
in condition classes 1 and 2 and decreasing the number of acres in condition class 3. As Skyliner
Road is the only means into and out of the area, the purpose of the project is to also provide safe
egress and ingress for residents and firefighters during fire events and to develop a “shelter in
place” for local residents should egress be cut off.
