Premier Old Growth Ponderosa Pines at risk | Project summary | FAQ's

Frequently Asked QuestionS:
How will treatments improve the wildfire situation? In general, reducing fuel ladders immediately reduces fire danger as well as improving growing conditions for large ponderosa pines, which build fire resistance (wildfire defense)
What size trees will be removed? Five alternatives are being developed to give a range of options for the size of trees to be removed from none, 8", 12", 14" to 21" in diameter. (Pathways to Vision)
What are the impacts from logging? Scenery and resource protection will be designed into logging considerations. Soils will show signs of disturbance, skid trails may be visible for several years, and slash piles will be present until they are removed or burned. (Achieving the Vision)

Will there be clear cuts?

No. Clear cutting, as seen in some westside fir forests, is not a desired treatment option for the Metolius Basin.
Will roads be closed? Yes, some roads are being proposed to be closed. We will evaluate the road network to see how it can meet transportation needs while being more environmentally sensitive and affordable.
