How are these Landscape Character zones defined?

These Landscape Characteristics are representative of "focal species areas".

Focal species areas are portions of the landscape that have the best potential biological capability to provide late successional (old growth) habitat for an identified focal or indicator species.

Managing for old growth habitat

The Metolius Basin Project area is within a Late-Successional Reserve under the Northwest Forest Plan. This means that management objectives should protect and enhance late successional and old-growth forest ecosysytems in the area, which serve as habitat for dependent species such as the spotted owl, goshawk, Peck's penstemon, and white-headed woodpecker.

This landscape is capable of producing different kinds of old growth habitats, that are used by different kinds of old growth species.

These landscape character zones display the different kinds of old growth habitats and the species who need these conditions for nesting, foraging, traveling, or growing.
