Notes about Smoke Emissions From Washington
It is not possible to directly compare annual emissions from prescribed burning in
Washington prior to 1992 with later years for these reasons:
- Reporting of burns under 100 tons was not required prior to 1992.
- Procedures for estimating consumed tonnage were changed in 1992.
- Totals from this database will not match the 1985-1989 baseline used to calculate the
emission reduction targets of the Washington Clean Air Act. The reasons for this
difference are outlined in appendix 12 of the Washington State Smoke Management
Plan. The Smoke Management Plan will be available soon on the Washington States
Department of Natural Resources home page (http://www.wa.gov/dnr).
