Recreation Activities: Truckee District
So Much to Do, So Much to See.
The Truckee Ranger District is located in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains. The high elevation, combined with Northern California's mild climate
creates the perfect atmosphere for year-round outdoor recreation. Warm days,
cool nights and clear skies are the norm in the summer months. Try camping along
one of our reservoirs, or on the Truckee River. Our trails take you where
incredible views reward your effort. Swimming, boating, fishing, visiting
historic sites, hiking in the Granite Chief Wilderness and exploring the Forest
on off-highway vehicles are some of the activities to keep you and your family
active.
Or just sit back, relax and listen to the breeze rustling the in pines.
Though Truckee is known for receiving plenty of snow, summer temperatures are
generally warm, perfect for enjoying all types of winter activities under clear,
blue skies.
In winter join people from all over the world at nearby ski areas, or venture
into the solitude of the backcountry for skiing, snowshoeing or snowboarding.
Snowmobile routes take riders into a winter wonderland.
Heritage
This area has a treasure trove of historic and prehistoric
sites, from Native American evidence, the Overland Emigrant Trail, Central
Pacific railroad, the 19th century ice industry, and early lumber operations.
Pioneer bridge, shown here, is a famous part of historic U.S. 40 at Donner Pass, which has carried traffic across the Sierra since 1924. Since the early 1960s, Interstate 80 has carried the bulk of traffic, but people still flock to the old highway to avoid crowds, slow down, and enjoy the view of Donner Lake from the viewpoint next to Pioneer Bridge.
