Twenty newly sworn in Americorps youth will be performing service projects for the first time on the San Bernardino National Forest, benefitting the forest as well as surrounding communities.
On December 4, at the swearing in ceremony, Forest Supervisor Jeanne Wade Evans emphasized the importance of the program, "These service projects are ideal learning opportunities for young adults. While they are working to restore public land, they are also learning about the history of America's national service programs."
The crew is being managed by the San Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA). Sarah Miggins, Executive Director for the SBNFA said, "Many folks have been instrumental in the formation and funding of the new AmeriCorps crew. This crew is poised to create history and honor those who walked before them."
Corps members include: Michael Pacheco, Rene Rosales, Chris Wright, Pete Bon, Kenderick McKenny, Andrea Bueno, Adem Lizaola, Brett Paris, Molina Su, Ben Schreiber, Chris Kidd, Alfred Villagas, Nicholas Brown, Danny Carter, Aaron Jones, Juan Zambrano, Herlinda Ortiz, Juan Blanco, and Maria Cambray.
AmeriCorps youth perform work in the spirit of the original Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) inspired by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during a period of economic crisis. The CCC helped restore the nation's parks and forests, revitalize the economy, and supported their families and themselves. During the CCC era more than three billion trees were planted nationwide.
