Part 1: Assessing the Need for Change
|
February 14, 2003
|
Key Findings
- The current direction does not reduce the acreage of wildfire burned
over time. Therefore, it is inconsistent with national policy. (Goal
2 -- Reduce Hazardous Fuels)
- The standards and guidelines in the ROD do not restore historic fire
regimes across the landscape. (Goal 3 -- Restore Fire-adapted Ecosystems)
- The standards and guidelines limit the potential for communities to
seek economic opportunities resulting from fuel treatment by-products.
(Goal 4 -- Promote Community Assistance)
- The current reliance on prescribed fire as the preferred fuels treatment
method is unrealistic because of air quality regulations and available
burn days.
