Shasta Unit - Trails

Trails at Shasta Lake are open all year, but it is best to hike them in the spring and fall.

Tips/ Suggestions:   If you choose to hike these trails in the summer, be sure and take plenty of water.  Summer heat is quite severe in this area and there is no drinking water available.

Pets: Pets are allowed in the recreation areas unless posted. They must be on a leash when in a developed site.

Bailey Cove 3.1 miles Moderate Exit I-5 at O'Brien, exit #695.  Take Shasta Caverns Road, 1 mile to Bailey Cove Road.

Exit I-5 at Oasis Road, exit #683, or Mountain Gate, exit # 697, then east to Bear Mountain Road, approx. 9 miles.

1 mile Difficult Exit I-5 at Oasis Road, exit #683, or Mountain Gate, exit # 697, then east to Bear Mountain Road, approx. 9 miles.
Dry Fork Creek 4.7 miles Moderate Exit I-5 at Shasta Dam Blvd., exit #685.  Take Lake or Shasta Dam Blvd. towards Shasta Dam.  Trail is located on the west side of Shasta Dam.  You will need to request a security pass in advance to cross the dam.

Closure Information for Shasta Dam

Fisherman's      Point 0.4 miles Easy Exit I-5 at Shasta Dam Blvd., exit #685.  Take Lake or Shasta Dam Blvd. towards Shasta Dam.
Hirz Bay 1.6 miles Easy Exit I-5 at Gilman Road, exit #698, 10 miles to Hirz Bay campground or 12 miles to the Dekkas Rock day use area.
Packers Bay Trails:  
East Side 0.4 mile Moderate Directions for the East Side and Fish Loop trails: Exit northbound I-5 at O'Brien, exit # 695, and join southbound I-5 traffic.  Exit at Packers Bay Road.  Follow signs toward Packers Bay boat ramp.  The Fish Loop Trail begins and end at the Packers Bay parking lot.  The Eastside Trail begins at the Packers Bay Marina Boat Ramp.  *There is a daily fee for the use of the Packers Bay parking lot.
Fish Loop 0.7 mile Easy
Overlook 0.4 mile Easy Directions for the Overlook and Waters Gulch trails: Exit northbound I-5 at O'Brien, exit # 695, and join southbound I-5 traffic.  Exit at Packers Bay Road.  Follow signs toward Packers Bay boat ramp.  Trailheads and gravel parking area are on the right, 1/2 mile before the Packers Bay boat ramp parking lot.

The Waters Gulch trail ends at the Packers Bay parking lot. The paved road from the Packers Bay boat ramp parking lot back up to the Waters Gulch trailhead can be walked to complete the loop.  Expect steep inclines on this road.  If you choose to start at this trail at the Packers Bay parking lot, there is a daily fee for the use of this facility.
Waters Gulch 2.8 miles Difficult
 
Potem Falls 0.5 mile Easy From I-5, take Highway 299 east 31 miles to Fenders Ferry Road (Road 27).  On Fenders Ferry Road, drive approximately 5 miles.
Samwel Cave 1 mile Moderate Boat Access Only trail located on the McCloud Arm of Shasta Lake.
Sugarloaf 1 mile Moderate Exit I-5 at Lakeshore Drive/Antler's Road, exit #702.  Follow Lakeshore Drive west  approximately 4 miles.
