Hume Lake Ranger District
Over-Snow Vehicles (OSV) Information

Hume Lake Ranger District

The Hume Lake Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest offers roads and trails for cross-country skiing and roads for snowmobiling. Snow play is usually permitted throughout the general forest area. Information may be obtained from the Hume Lake District Office.

Four parking areas are provided for winter recreation. Cherry Gap is located on Highway 180 north of Grant Grove. The other three are located on the Generals Highway at Quail Flat, Big Meadows, and Upper Woodward. The Forest Service provides public restroom facilities at Quail Flat and Big Meadow.

Snowmobile roads are available from each of these parking areas. Developed snowmobile roads are marked with international symbols and orange diamond-shaped signs. There are intermittently groomed snowmobile roads available from the three trailheads on the Generals Highway. All snowmobiles are required to be registered with the State of California and have a valid "Green Sticker" affixed to the vehicle. Snowmobile riding is not allowed off roads within the Giant Sequoia National Monument, in any designated wilderness areas, or on trails. All snowmobile routes are open to skiers and snowshoers.

A groomed road from the Big Meadows and Woodward Trailheads provides snowmobilers access to Montecito Sequoia Resort which offers food, lodging, equipment rentals, ice skating and many other winter activities in a family atmosphere.

Cross-Country Ski trails are available from each of the four parking areas. Developed ski trails are marked with international symbols and blue diamond shaped signs. There are also undeveloped and unmarked ski trails available. These are not marked on the ground, but some are identified on the map. Skiers may ski over any area of the Sequoia National Forest unless an area is marked as closed to the prohibited activity.

Snow Play is permitted throughout the general forest area and at each of the four parking areas. Use caution to select a safe legal spot to park and to snow play. Do not slide down hills into roadways or parking areas.
