Kern River Valley Receives Forest Service Grants

LAKE ISABELLA, CA, May 16, 2003 Greenhorn District Ranger Dave Freeland is pleased to announce that over $300,000 in grants have been approved for the Kern River Valley by the U.S. Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Regional Office. Grants are funded through several federal programs which include the Economic Action Program, National Fire Plan and Community Protection Program.

The following grant proposals were approved and will receive funding this year:

1. $30,000 to Kern River Valley Revitalization, Inc. to help implement the recently completed Giant Sequoia National Monument Marketing Plan.
2. $56,400 to the Kern River Valley Fire Safe Council for preparing the Alta Sierra Community Firewise Action Plan.
3. $200,000 to the Kern River Valley Fire Safe Council for performing hazardous fuels reduction at Alta Sierra.
4. $21,700 to the Kern River Valley Fire Safe Council for performing Rogers Road hazardous fuels reduction.

"The Kern River Valley has been very successful in receiving federal grants over the past several years", reported Greenhorn District Public Affairs Officer, Margie Clack. "The reason is because those groups who submit applications have done an outstanding job recommending meaningful projects that will help market recreation and tourism for the Kern River Valley or will reduce risk of catastrophic wildfire in our fire prone area", Clack said.

Ranger Freeland stated that over $560,000 if federal economic recovery and community protection grants have been allocated to the Kern River Valley since 1995.
