WHISKEY FLAT DAYS KICKS OFF SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

Whiskey Flat Days Parade

Leading the parade entry was a banner announcing "Celebrating a Century of Service" along with "United States Forest Service 1905-2005", carried by district personnel.

Sequoia National Forest began celebrating our Centennial with the Whiskey Flat Days Parade February 19th, over the Presidents weekend holiday.

The Cannell Meadow/Greenhorn Ranger District took the "Sweepstakes" trophy for their parade entry that included the efforts of over 40 people, and 5 months of preparation. The entry showcasing the Forest Service's 100th Birthday, included cooperation between the Sequoia, Inyo and San Bernardino National Forests, along with Southern California Edison.

Leading the parade entry was a banner announcing "Celebrating a Century of Service" along with "United States Forest Service 1905-2005", carried by district personnel. The banner was followed by a 1924 Model-T Patrol Rig, once used by the Forest Service, coming from the San Bernardino National Forest and their Fire Education volunteers. Our Deputy District Ranger, Brenda Ehmann rode along inside.

The United States and Forest Service flags followed on horseback carried by district personnel. A team of Sorrel mules followed carrying both show and working class packs, lead by the Inyo National Forest. The mules, Bonnie, Ruby, Boomer, Bud and Clyde, endeared themselves to our spectators with their hefty packs, control and packing abilities!

Our float, built by Southern California Edison, came next with the replica of a 1920-1930's cabin displaying historical items, along with our District Ranger, Dave Freeland and his wife Debbie, in period replica costumes. The cabin was a favorite of the crowd and has been slated for several more events. Following the cabin were district personnel passing out Smokey lapel pins among the spectators.

The entry was a huge success. The public's general consensus was "a professional job, reflecting a well working team and class act." It also generated an enormous amount of forest service pride among the employees.

What a great reflection this was on the forest service family and an even greater message to our public!

Happy 100th Birthday Forest Service!
