Student Opportunities

The Forest Service has many opportunities for part-time and temporary employment for high school and college students, including internships and cooperative student opportunities. One of the student educational employment programs is the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). This program provides opportunities for Forest Service units to employ students pursuing a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma; vocational/technical certificate; or degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, graduate, or professional level.

The objective of the program is to provide maximum flexibility and opportunities for the Forest Service to hire students and provide them with practical work experience and training. And to meet employment needs of both the agency and the students and to assist the Forest Service in its progress towards a workforce representative of the nation's diversity.

Definition of student - A student is an individual who has been accepted for enrollment, or who is enrolled, as a degree seeking student in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

At time of enrollment you must be taking at least a half-time course load, the definition of half-time is the definition provided by the institution in which you are enrolled. You also must be in good academic standing, as defined by the institution you are attending. Under STEP, you may work full-time or part-time schedules at any time during the year, but your work schedule should not interfere with your academic schedule.

Students are appointed to positions not to exceed 1 year. Appointments under this authority may be extended in one year increments as long as you meet the definition of a student. Noncitizens may be appointed to Student Temporary Employment Program provided that the student is lawfully admitted to the United States as a permanent resident or is otherwise authorized to be employed.
