Inventory mdb Information

Naming Convention for Grid and Plantation Inventory Database (.mdb)

Most forest inventories currently have the following .mdb naming convention. There will be a .mdb for the wildland plots (grip) and, if available, a .mdb for plantation plots (plip). The first three letters of the .mdb represent the Forest (Forests Codes); the next four letters refer to the inventory types, grip or plip; the next 2 numbers refer to the year the data was compiled; the last number after the underscore refers to the version of the data.

e.g. anfgrip00_1.mdb is the Angeles Grid Inventory compiled in 2000, version one.

Naming Convention for Plus Inventory Database (.mdb)

A Plus inventory consists of all available FIA Hex plus intensification plots, thus the inventory type name. There is one .mdb for each forest which incorporates wildland and plantation plots. The first three letters of the database represent the Forest (Forests Codes); the next four letters represent the inventory type; the next 2 numbers refer to the year the inventory was completed; the last number after the underscore refers to the version of the data; lastly, the "inv" stands for inventory.

e.g. infplus04_1inv.mdb is the Inyo Plus Inventory compiled in 2004, version one.

FSVeg Inventory MSAccess Database

The FSVeg MSAccess Database (.mdb) consists of six data tables; containing the setting measurements, live, dead standing and down tree species attributes, plant species vegetation cover profile and surface cover, down woody debris, tree volume estimates and plot/condition classification results for existing vegetation types. National Codes and standards are used where ever possible. A database is populated for each National Forest from the latest FIA Plot samples and made available for download. Older periodic inventories may have a separate database for plantation FIA plots.

Detailed Data for .mdb

Within each downloadable .zip file is a .mdb which contains the following tables:

Data Table Description Table Name Links to Detailed Data Table Format Descriptions and Associated Reference Tables
Plot location and setting information along with strata label assignments for each FIA subplot FSVEG_CFRM_V FSVEG_CFRM_V
Detailed tree and log expand data for wildland and plantation plots FSVEG_TXPT_V FSVEG_TXPT_V
Plant species vegetation and surface cover expand data for wildland and plantation plots FSVEG_VXPT_V FSVEG_VXPT_V
Woody debris volume expand data for wildland and plantation plots FSVEG_WXPT_V FSVEG_WXPT_V
Wood volume estimates for 12 different volume types for each tree over 1 inch in diameter ORACLE_TREE_VOLUME ORACLE_TREE_VOLUME
Classifications used in Map Accuracy Assessment work including: Lifeform, Calveg types, QMD conifer and hardwood tree topstory sizes, total tree cover from above, FGDC physiognomic order, class, subclass, California Wildlife Habitat Relationships type, size and density PLOT_CLASSIFICAITON PLOT_CLASSIFICATION
R5 Inventory Strata Averages Link Table R5_INV_LNK_AVERAGES R5_INV_LNK_AVERAGES

The FSVEG Inventory MSAccess Database tables are related to one another as describe on the FSVEG Inventory Database Table Relationships page.

Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) Input Files

For each National Forest, the FSVeg database is reformatted into an additional MSAccess Database (.mdb) suitable for input to the FVS growth and yield model variants and associated tools.

SummaryVB

The SummaryVB program accepts the FSVEG MSAccess Database as input and provides information by stratum or plot/condition. SummaryVB produces reports for tree data, vegetation data, or woody debris data.

Tree SummaryVB reports include three types: Timber, Log, Snag, and Position. A variety of estimates are included and some with standard errors. The Timber report displays information for commercial and noncommercial softwoods and hardwoods; the Log report displays information by diameter size groupings for down logs ten inches and greater; the Position report displays estimates for live and standing dead trees by tree position. The Snag report displays information by diameter groupings and volumes. Graphic outputs are also available. By selecting all three reports in a single run, the last page of the printout displays plots for strata versus planning unit.

Vegetation SummaryVB provides two types of reports: Layer and Lifeform. The Layer report displays information such as percent cover, average height by layer, and vegetation type; the Lifeform report displays information by species. The layer report includes standard errors for the estimates.

Woody debris SummaryVB reports display weight and volume for all down woody material by diameter size class. They include measurements of fuelbed depth, duff, and litter.
