By linking to an associated data table (R5STRA02_1G.dat), displays of timber volume, timber value, and live tree biomass are possible. For more information about this layer and using the associated data, go to http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/rsl/projects/frdb/layers/r5stra.html Purpose This data was developed by the USDA Forest Service for use in strategic level planning at the National, Regional and Forest levels. Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used The Vegetation Inventory Strata map is a derived layer from two main sources, the latest Existing Vegetation map and vegetation inventories. Strata represent subpopulations of sample plots, grouped by vegetation map labels to reduce the statistical variance of estimates. The strata map provides a means of extrapolating per-acre resource values obtained from inventory plot data to an entire National Forest. This regionwide grid was derived from the strata layers of each National Forest. To create unique values for each forest, an item was added (STRALNK) to each strata coverage comprised of the concatenation of forest administrative code, planning unit, and strata label. Then, an exhaustive list of every possible STRALNK value was compiled and a unique control number (STRALNK_CN) was assigned to each STRALNK value. This control number was joined back to the strata coverages, providing a numeric value which could be used in the Arc POLYGRID command. Grids of each forest's strata layer were then produced and combined into a single regionwide strata grid. To associate inventory data with the strata grid, a spreadsheet was compiled containing timber volume, timber value, and live tree biomass values, listed by STRALNK. Volume and biomass data were derived from inventory plot data, and timber value information was derived from a three-year average of harvest values published by the California State Board of Equalization (see www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/timbertax.htm). In cases where a mapped strata had no corresponding plot data, an alternate link to the same or similar strata from a neighboring forest was substituted. Up to three alternate forests were designated, depending on the availability sample plot data for that strata in the neighboring forests. To assign board foot timber values to individual strata, the dominant Forest Type, size class, and geographic location of each mapped strata had to be crosswalked to corresponding codes used by the California State Board of Equalization (BOE). This process is described as follows: Timber harvest values published by BOE are listed by species codes, size codes, and Timber Value Areas. Hem/fir includes western hemlock, white fir, red fir, grand fir, spruce, and Shasta red fir. Ponderosa pine includes Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, and western white pine.
