Roadless areas serve as reference areas for research, bulwarks against invasive species, and as aquatic strongholds for fishes as well as vital habitat and migration routes for wildlife species, especially those requiring large home ranges. Purpose This data was developed by the USDA Forest Service for use in the 1979 RARE II Final EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) and reflects the status, both spatially and administratively, of inventoried roadless areas for Region 5 forests at that point in time. Supplemental_Information Procedures_Used The layers were originally created by each forest GIS Department on LT4X software. CALRARE79_1 (Roger Locke RSL/PMR) 9/22/98 - This coverage is a compilation of RARE II coverages from individual forest RARE II coverages Revisions CALRARE79_2 (Roger Locke RSL/PMR) 3/10/99 - This version has several "Other Roadless" areas added for the Modoc NF. CALRARE79_3 (SNH PMR) 1/18/00 - The result of congressional Inventoried Roadless Area data request of Nov.-Dec. 1999. Individual forest RARE II layers were brought together into a single region-wide IRA coverage used to fulfill the data request. This layer was the aggregated and dissolved to obtain new roadless area boundaries. Great amounts of time were then spent to rectify boundary discrepencies and omissions. Key attributes in this coding scheme are RARE II number, name, type and allocation (see respective FRDB data dictionary tables). RARE I areas Identified with a TYPE code of R1. These areas were designated as proposed wilderness areas prior to the 1979 RARE II analysis. These include the Trinity Alps (SHF-KNF) and Monarch (SNF-SQF) roadless areas. Since these areas were not officially part of the RARE II study, they do not have actual RARE II numbers. There is one RARE I area on the Six Rivers (Blue Creek) that didnt receive wilderness designation but was picked up under the forest plan. As a result, Blue Creek has an allocation of NA rather than PW. RARE II areas Identified with a TYPE code of RS. These are official and final RARE II areas, each having a unique name and number. Some of the RARE II areas were futher divided based on management allocation recommendataions. These original recommendations are preserved through coding of the ALLOC attribute. The original RARE II names have also been augmented to reflect the orignal allocation designations by adding an A, B, or C to the name. Valid RARE II allocations are W (recommended wilderness), FP (further planning), and NW (non-wilderness). Other Roadless areas Identified with a TYPE code of OR. This category encompasses all other inventoried roadless areas that were not recognized under a previous RARE effort. For the most part, these are areas that were identified as roadless areas under individual forest land management plans. Such areas do not have RARE II numbers and are given an ALLOC code of NR (non-RARE). Several forests do have OR areas that were initially considered as RARE II areas but were dropped from the final RARE II analysis and consequentially identified as roadless areas by respective forest plans.
