Supplemental_Information: This data was received on 8/24/06 from Elizabeth LaPoint Forester/GIS Specialist USDA Forest Service FIA National Spatial Data Services 271 Mast Road Durham, NH 03824 (603) 868-7675 elapoint@fs.fed.us <http://www.fs.fed.us/ne/fia> Name of dataset: ALL_PER.SHP Communication from Liz LaPoint in reference to this data sent to her: "From what we were told the files with name *_hydro_per_* are census water (perennial) - this corresponds to inland water." Excerpt from document written by Elizabeth LaPoint concerning her comparison of the year 2000 areas (from the GIS) to the year 1990 areas: "The Census Bureau had sent us shape files: 'lm_back' the total area per entity, 'per' the perennial or inland water, and 'sea' the coastal and territorial waters. To arrive at an area measurement for census land the water acreages must be subtracted from the acreages of lm_back. Another oddity of the Census Bureau's data is that glaciers and intermittent water (lakes that are "seasonal", snow melt streams, etc) are classified as land for area measurement purposes and are classified as water in the tiger files. A comparison of the Census Bureau's 2000 gazetteer file with the Census 90 file (from the GICS dataset of Census 90) showed many small differences in land area and water area. The land area acreages agreed more often than the water acreages. There were only 6 of 3233 cases of land area differences being greater than 10%. There were 116 of 3233 cases of water acreages being greater than 10% different. Some differences could be due to differences in the classification of intermittent water and glaciers. RI Tiger files were downloaded from <http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tigerua/ua_tgr2k.html> Summary: Although there are some cases where large differences exist between the Census Bureau's 90 data and the 2000 data we should move forward and start using the 2000 data." Coordinates in the TIGER/Line files have six implied decimal places, but the positional accuracy of these coordinates is not as great as the six decimal places suggest. The positional accuracy varies with the source materials used, but generally the information is no better than the established national map Accuracy standards for 1:100,000-scale maps from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); thus it is NOT suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.

Online_Linkage: <http://www.geographynetwork.com/>

Online_Linkage: <http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger>

Online_Linkage: <http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/tigerua/ua_tgr2k.html>

Cross_Reference:

Citation_Information:

Originator: Remote Sensing Lab, Region 5, USDA Forest Service

Publication_Date: 4/26/01

Title:

CALCFFL_N & CALCFFL_S

Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data

Other_Citation_Details:

Abstract: The CFFL layer contains line features of Cartographic Feature Files. For the CALCFFL_N layer the features are from the northern forests (Mendocino, Shasta-Trinity, Six Rivers, Klamath, Modoc, Lassen, Plumas, Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Basin, Eldorado, Stanislaus, Sierra, Inyo and Sequoia) and for the CALCFFL_S layer the features are from the southern forests (Angeles, San Bernardino, Cleveland and Los Padres). A Cartographic Feature File (CFF) is a digital data file containing a vector representation of the point and line features shown on a Forest Service Primary Base Series (PBS) map. The feature categories contained in the CFF are: transportation(roads and trails), streams and water bodies, political and administrative boundaries, land ownership, and other cultural features. Elevation contours, vegetation, and text geographic names, labels, etc.) are not included in the CFF. CFF data is collected by digitizing Primary Base Series (PBS) maps and revised using correction guide information provided by field units. PBS maps are large scale Forest Service maps constructed from U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps. In addition to the information carried on USGS maps, PBS maps contain additional Forest Service information such as protracted Public Land Survey System landlines, ownership, Forest Service route numbers, administrative boundaries and facilities. Purpose: CFFs provide a consistent base set of geographic features for use in Forest Service geographic information systems (GIS). Forest Service Regions and Forests perform additional data collection and attribution to further prepare CFFs for use in GIS. CFFs can be used individually or joined to form larger project areas.
