Vegetation and Inventory Sources: go to http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/rsl/projects/monitoring/inv-status.shtml The Vegetation Inventory Strata map is a derived layer from two main sources, the latest Existing Vegetation map and vegetation inventories. Vegetation inventories are partly available through the National FIA plot system, a systematic sampling of ground based plots on forested lands. This inventory system does an adequate job of sampling common forest populations, but often misses rare forest types. To make the inventories useful for land management planning, additional plots are installed in non-forest, rare forest types and plantations. The Existing Vegetation Map is used to post-stratify the National FIA plots, and to select intensification plots for rare regional types as well as conifer plantation age classes. Inventory plots are grouped into like populations through assigning condition classes or Strata labels to both the inventory plots and to a Strata map for each National Forest. Strata are created using crosswalk logic from CALVEG type, size and cover classes to regional types, size groups and density groups. While consistency between Forest strata logic is desirable, it is not always practical, therefore a unique CALVEG map label to Strata logic is completed for each Forest inventory. A crosswalk report is available as metadata to both the inventory and Strata map. The strata labels are required for all Forest Service lands; productive forests (capable of producing 10 percent cover of industrial wood) and non-productive forests types, as well as shrub, grass and non-vegetative cover types. The strata labels link the inventory per-acre estimates to the mapped acres of vegetation across the landscape. Some lumping of unique vegetation labels takes place to simplify the inventory into a smaller set of sampling populations. Stands of similar species, productivity, size and cover are lumped into strata for volume, growth, mortality, and structural estimates. The Strata GIS layer identifies the vegetation map and inventories that are used in it's development. Those Strata with no inventory plots are also identified. This occurs for some rare vegetation types, conifer plantations less than 10 years old and/or non-stocked forest land. For more information go to http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/rsl/projects/inventory/compilation.shtml Strata Link and Inventory Link The item Strata Link (STRALNK), a concatenation of Administrative Forest Number, Planning Unit and Strata, uniquely identifies every possible mapped strata in Region 5. Each FIA plot condition is assigned a corresponding strata map label, all plot conditions with the same map label are averaged into an inventory strata average by Administrative Forest and Planning Unit. The inventory strata (INV_LNK) is also assigned using a concatenation of Administrative Forest Number, Planning Unit and Strata, uniquely identifies every map strata containing inventory estimates. In cases where a mapped strata (STRALINK) had no corresponding inventory plot data (INV_LINK), an alternate INV_LNK with a matching inventory of vegetation type, structure, site class and productivity is assigned from neighboring forests. When optimum matches are not available, similar inventory strata of type size and structure are selected from the forest or its neighboring forests. The logic for assigning alternate links is displayed in the table below. Related volume and biomass data is available in a table that links to the feature class on INV_LNK. The volume and biomass values in this table are derived from vegetation inventories done on National Forests in Region 5.
