This feature class contains pest and fire mortality mapped during the aerial detection survey for Region 5 from 1993 to 2008. Includes estimates of trees per acre and number of trees affected, tree species affected, damage type, and damage causing agents when available.

Map tree mortality and other forest damage for 1993 to 2008 in Region 5.

The R5 aerial detection survey was undertaken by Forest Health Protection and other Forest Service personnel and National Park Service personnel. The surveys began in 1993 and have been conducted annually through 2008. Since 2001 surveys were completed for all forested areas in R5 National Forests, and also included National Parks (Lassen, Sequoia-Kings and Yosemite), other Federal, Tribal, State and private lands in or near National Forest boundaries. Polygons and their attributes were estimated visually by trained surveyors according to Forest Health Protection standards. Digital aerial sketchmapping (DASM) sytems were used for the entire survey starting in 2006. Previous years were conducted with a combination of DASM and paper maps. Surveys were undertaken in single-engine high-wing aircraft flying 1,000 - 2,000' above ground level, sometimes in hazy or turbulent conditions. Mapped damage included both biotic (insect, disease, and vertebrate damage) and abiotic agents (wind, geothermal and wild and prescribed fire damage).
