Meetings
JUNE 23-27, 2003
During the week of June 23rd, 2003, Pacific Southwest Regional
Forester Jack Blackwell and forest supervisors of six national forests
in northern California reviewed 8 years of performance under the
Northwest Forest Plan.
The
intent of the review was to identify areas in which the Forest Service
can improve its management under the Northwest Forest Plan to more
closely accomplish the ecological outcomes and social outputs envisioned
when the Northwest Forest Plan was adopted in 1994; and ways to
improve accomplishment of National
Fire Plan goals to protect communities, watersheds and wildlife
habitats.
Forest Service and other agencies participated in meetings and
field sessions throughout the week. Representatives of tribal and
county government, other agencies, interest groups and individuals
living in communities near the national forests, representing a
cross section of views and interests, also participated in the review.
Dr. Jack Ward Thomas, former Forest Service Chief, also participated
in the review. Dr. Thomas led the Forest Ecosystem Management and
Assessment Team. The 1993 Forest Ecosystem Management and Assessment
Team report laid the foundation for the Northwest Forest Plan.
