Big Sage Reservoir and Area
This campground is the perfect spot for a day of fishing and
or boating. Big Sage is a large, shallow reservoir surrounded
by juniper woodland and sagebrush. Established to provide irrigation
water, it also offers abundant recreational opportunities. A new
boat ramp was constructed in 1997. A campground lies on the shore
near the boat ramp. The reservoir itself occupies several thousand
acres. Birds find safe refuge for nesting on a number of islands
scattered across the reservoir.
Getting There: Big Sage Reservoir is accessed by traveling
west 3 miles from Alturas on Highway 299, turn north on Crowder
Flat Road #73 for 6 miles, turn right on Co. Rd.#180, go 3 miles
to Big Sage Dam and campground.
Elevation: 5,100 feet above sea level
Season: Generally May - October (Open - toilets closed
for winter and no trash pickup - Packin/Packout)

Big Sage Reservoir is a discovery
point on the Modoc Backcountry Discovery
Trail. The Modoc Segment of this multi state route consists
of over 200 miles of roads designed for touring with your family
in your Sports Utility Vehicle.
Watchable Wildlife:
The Big Sage Reservoir is near the
home range of the Devil's Garden wild
horse herd. The area is rich with opportunities to view antelope
and migrating waterfowl.
