November 21, 2009 - The water system at Fouts Springs has been shut off for repairs and no water will be available at the site. Forest visitors in this area will need to bring water with them for both potable use, including drinking, as well as for any other needs. In addition to the Fouts Springs site, this shut-off will affect the Davis Flats Staging Area.

Local Weather

There are nearly 1,500 interagency Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) strategically located throughout the United States - mostly in the Western states. Weather data from these stations is utilized to assist land management agencies with a variety of projects - monitoring air quality, rating fire danger, and providing information for research applications.

To provide the current weather conditions on the Mendocino National Forest, the data from these weather stations is available via the links ([Symbol]: Denotes links to RAWS Station Data.) on the graphical map or from the following list:

NOTE - Due to the remoteness of the locations and their dependency on solar panels and batteries for power, there may be periods of time when data from a particular station may be unavailable.

Forest Road Conditions

Road 24N01 below Sugarfoot Campground to the junction with 24N31 (roughly a six mile stretch) is closed for road repair. Forest Highway 7 (County Road 307) is open past Alder Springs to Covelo. Drive cautiously and watch for boulders that may be on the roads. For your safety carry emergency equipment in your vehicle.

Snow Reports

On the first of February, March, April, and May each year, snow depth and moisture content is measured at Anthony Peak. The Plaskett Meadows snow depth and moisture content is only measured on the first of April. The snow reports for previous years are available along with the current year's totals.

Forest Activity Levels

Project Activity Levels are a forecast of fire weather conditions and, at certain levels, restrict activities otherwise permitted on the Forest.

Closures and Restrictions

The Forest Supervisor may issue Special Orders/Closures that will restrict or close the use of certain areas if the need arises. Such orders will be posted so that visitors to the National Forest can reasonably be expected to be familiar with them. Copies of the orders will also be available in the offices of Forest Supervisors and District Rangers.
