Recreational Activities - Camping, Campfires, & Site-Specific Wilderness Regulations

THE FOLLOWING ACTS ARE PROHIBITED IN WILDERNESS

  • Camping overnight in the Wilderness, without a valid wilderness permit
  • Possessing or storing food, toiletries or refuse in a manner that allows bears or animals access to it
  • Storing or leaving unattended equipment, personal properties or supplies for more than 24 hours [Photo]: Campsite is proper distance from water and tent pitched on durable surface.
  • Camping within 100 feet of lakes, streams or trails, terrain permitting, and never within 50 feet of lakes or streams or within 25 feet of trails
  • Washing and/or discharging soap waste within 100 feet of lakes or streams
  • Depositing bodily waste within 100 feet of lakes, streams, campsites, or trails
  • Discharging a firearm, except for emergencies and the taking of game as permitted by State law
  • Possessing or using any wheeled or mechanical device (bicycle, motorcycle, cart, etc.), except for persons with disabilities
  • Shortcutting a switchback on any forest trail
  • Entering or using the wilderness in a group larger than 15 persons or with more than 25 head of pack or saddle stock
  • Hitching, tethering or tying pack or saddle stock within 100 feet of lakes, streams, trails, or campsites except while loading or unloading
  • Leaving any debris, garbage or refuse within the wildernes

ANSEL ADAMS WILDERNESS

Bear canister required trails: High Trail (PCT), River, Shadow Lake, Minaret Lake, JMT North, Beck Lake, Fern Lake, Red Cones, JMT/PCT South, Fish Creek, Rush Creek.

Campfires prohibited: Above 10,000 ft. In addition, below these elevations site specific closures include: within 300 ft of Shadow Lake; within the watersheds of Lake Ediza and Minaret Lake; within Shadow Creek camping restrictions; and within 1/4 mile of the outlets of Garnet and Thousand Island Lakes.

Camping prohibited: Within 300 ft. of Shadow Lake & between Shadow Creek and the trail from Shadow Lake inlet to the creek crossing below Lake Ediza; the south side of Lake Ediza and on the west side meadows; within 1/4 mile of the outlet of either Garnet Lake or Thousand Island Lake.


JOHN MUIR WILDERNESS

Bear canister required trails: Duck Pass, Bishop Pass, Treasure Lakes, Little Lakes Valley, Mono Pass, Kearsarge Pass, Main Mt. Whitney Trail (overnight use).

Campfires prohibited: Above 10,000 ft. north of Glacier Divide and above 10,400 ft. south of Glacier Divide. In addition, below these elevations site specific closures include the Purple Lake drainage, North and South Forks of Big Pine Creek, Tyee Lakes, Sabrina Basin, Kearsarge Pass, Golden Trout Lakes and Robinson Lakes drainage, Main Mt. Whitney Trail, North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, Meysan Lakes drainage, and within 1,000ft. of Anvil Camp on the Shepherd Pass trail.

Camping prohibited: Within 300 ft. of the outlet of Duck Lake and Purple Lake; at Mirror Lake and Trailside Meadow on the Main Mt. Whitney Trail; within 500 feet of Golden Trout Lake (Sierra NF); with pack and saddle east of Shepherd Pass.

Grazing prohibited: Cascade Valley meadows, Pioneer Basin, Hilgard Meadow, and East of Shepherd Pass.

Pack and Saddle Stock prohibited: Main Mt. Whitney Trail and Meysan Lake Trail.


HOOVER WILDERNESS

Campfires prohibited: 20 Lakes Basin northwest of Saddlebag Lake


GOLDEN TROUT WILDERNESS

Campfires prohibited: Chicken Spring Lake and Rocky Basin Lakes
