General Forest Winter Snowmobile Travel

General Forest Winter OSV Travel

Winter is a beautiful time to explore the Eldorado National Forest. Miles of roads and trails offer excellent opportunities for winter enjoyment.

Where can I go?

Winter motorized travel is not allowed in Wilderness areas, some areas bordering the wilderness, and Loon Lake. In addition, some areas are restricted to designated roads and trails only, such as those surrounding Sierra at Tahoe, Kirkwood complex, and over Little Round Top. Check with the local office for questions regarding specific areas.

Other Information:

  • Registration. California State Law requires that your snowmobiles must be registered and the greensticker displayed. Out-of-state visitors need to purchase a non-resident permit if they do not have a valid permit or registration from their home state.
  • Show courtesy and respect for other trail users. Snowmobilers should reduce speed when encountering skiers or snowshoers. Skiers and snowshoers should yield the track to oncoming or overtaking snowmobilers.
  • Never Travel alone! Always travel with a "buddy".
  • Private Land. When crossing private land, stay on designated trails. Snowmobiles are not permitted in developed downhill or groomed cross country ski areas.
  • Be aware that changing snow conditions may expose unmarked hazards and make trails and signing difficult to see.
  • Become informed. Obtain maps, regulations, and other information from the Forest Service. Learn the rules and follow them.
  • Leave No Trace. Remember to take out of the Forest anything that you brought in. Whenever you can, make an extra effort to remove trash that less thoughtful persons have left behind.

SILVER BEAR SNOWMOBILE TRAILS

Depending on snow levels and weather conditions, the Silver Bear snowmobile trail system includes 20-55 miles of routes.  More information about Silver Bear Snowmobile Trails.
